Frère du
sculpteur de génie qui est Camille CLAUDEL, Paul serat un grand écrivain et diplomate
français. Il est né comme sa soeur sur les confins de la
Champagne et des Ardennes dans une famille de la bourgeoisie provinciale. Durant son
adolescence, il s'interresa à la lecture de Arthur Rimbaud et c'est dès l'âge de 15 ans
qu'il commence à écrire. Il passe son baccaulérat à 17 ans au Lycée Louis-Le-Grand de
Paris et poursuit ses études par une licence en droit. Il faudra attendre un soir de
Noël 1886, pour que Paul Claudel reçoive une illumination subite pour la foi.
Parallèlement à ses écrits, Paul Claudel poursuit un brillante
carrière diplomatique. Cette carrière le conduit à séjourner presque constamment à
l'étranger dans divers pays. Il sera consul de France à Prague, à Francfort, à
Hambourg, puis Ministre Plenipotentiaire à Rio de Janeiro, à Copenhague et enfin
Ambassadeur de France à Tokyo, à Washington et à Bruxelles.
La fin de sa carrière diplomatique lui permet d'épanouir
glorieusement sa vie littéraire dans sa propriété de Brangues aux confins de la Savoie
et du Dauphiné.
